WHAT IS YOUR ENERGY USAGE? (contd)

  • Posted by: Admin

Electricity usage is a very important aspect of any profit-making business. Following our previous post (read here), we should, therefore, know how to reduce electricity usage to save cost. This would increase the overall efficiency of the business.

Here are a few more tips on how to attain electricity usage efficiency.

Printers

The printer is one of the most used office items. You can reduce printer use by not printing copies of every version of a report or project. Save copies on your computer and print only when the need arises.

Air-conditioners

These are the biggest energy guzzlers in a workplace. Position thermostats away from draughts, direct sunlight and near machinery or equipment that gives off heat, as this will ensure that they give the accurate temperature. Keep doors and windows closed when air-conditioners are in use. Make sure that the air-conditioners and/or systems are regularly maintained to save energy and operating costs. In addition, if the units or systems need renewing, install energy-efficient equipment. To ensure that air-conditioners are truly effective, keep the cool air in by adding insulation to the walls and ceilings. Similarly, coat windows with heat rejection window films to reduce UV rays that enter.

Behavioural changes

For instance, Employers can motivate staff to change their behaviour by providing incentives, such as holding inter-department competitions, giving rewards and encouraging leadership in energy usage management.

Kitchen equipment

Make sure you use the kettle, refrigerator and microwave oven efficiently. Avoid leaving the refrigerator door open for longer than is necessary. Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need. Unplug the kettle and microwave when not in use.

Workspace

  • Use cubicles instead of rooms, as cubicles share light sources and air-conditioning.
  • Install motion sensitive light switches in areas with little or no activities.
  • Idling machines waiting for work are an expense.
  • As soon as possible, Shut off cooling to unused areas of the plant. Closing overhead doors and shading windows in the heat can result in large HVAC savings.
  • Air compressors can be the largest users of electricity in some manufacturing facilities. Furthermore, Many places can provide a no or low-cost evaluation of your compressed air system.
  • Properly maintained equipment will often reduce energy consumption by >10% through things like properly tensioned fan belts and greased fittings/bearings.
  • Fans are some of the least efficient things used in manufacturing. Slow down or turn off any unneeded fans. Slowing a fan down by only 10% can result in 25% energy saving.
